Empirical Research of Art Therapists for Children with Developmental Disabilities

Abstract
The study aims to find out the difficulties that art therapists for children with developmental disabilities experience, and the qualities, difficulties, and limitation that they think of by analyzing their experiences with such children. The participants of this study are those who are master¡¯s degree or higher in art therapy, and 10 of them who have experiences for over 3 years in art therapy for children with developmental disabilities. I collected data from the focus group interviews. In the phase of data analysis, I applied Giorgi¡¯s methods. It resulted in the elements of art therapists¡¯ motivation with 12 meaning units, 4 subcategories, and 2 upper categories, and in the elements of the experience with 43 meaning units, 14 subcategories, and 4 upper categories. The results of qualification and future of art therapists for children with developmental disabilities turned out to be 19 meaning units, 5 subcategories, and 2 upper categories. In overall, 74 meaning units, 23 subcategories and 8 supper categories were resulted. This study with the title of the experience of the art therapists for children with developmental disabilities has the meaning that the art therapy has various positive effect on such children, and the effort for their families, qualifications of the art therapists and the expectation for the future have been addressed in depth and understood. It is expected to give empathetic message to the art therapists, and also indirect influence of the actual experiences.
